Notes for Sarah “Sally” BRYAN
John Bryan, married Frances Battle. He was a Captain in the Revolution and while home on a furlough, the first or second morning, was killed at his own door by Colonel Flanning, a British officer with a squad of men, who had by some means learned of his presence. They called him to the door and demanded that he take oath to support the King's cause and shot him upon his refusal to do so. He is said to have had a large family. One son, Lewis Bryan, married Elizabeth White and had six children:
1 Sarah, married Jesse Salts.
2 Annie, married Isaac Rebber.
3 Polly, married Peter Barnes.
4 Fannie, married James Davis.
5 Battle, married Rebecca Miller.
6 John Gilson, married Pollie Morris.
John Gilson Bryan lived to be 98 years old. Battle Bryan and Rebecca Miller had twelve children: Polly, Susan, John Gilson, Henry M., William, Lewis, Nancy, Elizabeth, Joseph D., Sally, Jane, Caroline and Ann.
William Lewis Bryan married Sallie Hayes; had eight children: Julia C., James H., Cora L., George A., Carrie H., Robert K., Bartlett R. and Lewis L.
6 Elinor Bryan, daughter of Morgan, senior, married William Linville. Name appears in many deeds of Augusta County. They later went to North Carolina and both are said to have been killed by Indians.
7 Mary (daughter of Morgan), probably married a Mr. Forbes, as Morgan in his will leaves "to my granddaughter, Mary Forbes, my great pot of five shillings". This could not be Mary, daughter of his son, Thomas, as she was not born until 1769, although she did marry a Mr. Forbes.

Families living close by them in 1830 - Polly Salts married Andrew McCoy on 5 May 1830. In the 1830 census, Andrew McCoy is listed on the same page as Jesse Salts. The date of the 1830 is 1 June 1830. So Polly (Mary) has just married and moved out of her father’s house. In the 1830 census, Polly is shown as 15 to 20 and Andrew is shown as 20-30. I have not been able to find Andrew McCoy in any later census.

I think Martha and Susan were sisters, and also Sarah "Sallie" Ralston who married William Starnes, Jr. and raised Jesse and Martha's son William's son, William, Jr. The other son, John, was raised by Rebecca Starnes and John White [See note at the end of this.] From Dixie 28 Feb 2009

On the 1860 census, Jesse is living with Martha Spurior. However, his wife Sarah, is living with their son Lewis (Jesse and Sarah Bryant's son). It looks like they split sometime between 1850 and 1860 and Jessee moved in with Martha Spurior. However, on the 1870 census Jesse is not listed and Martha is listed as a Salts. There is also a boy the age of 13 named William Salts.
