SHIELDS - It is known that Hannah E. Salts married George W. Sheilds. They have been well documented from marriage to death. However, on the 1870 census it looks like the man recording the census got two families mixed up. The husbands of Carter and George are with the wrong families. I have recorded both as they were found in the census.

Alice Pendergrass is living in Missouri a few houses away as a servant with the family of Joseph Robertson. It is not known when Alice migrated to Missouri, but she could have come with her sister’s family, Alexander and Lydia Pendergrass Salts. Alexander was a brother to Hannah Salts Shields.

We know that around the 6th of November in 1890 Alexander and Lydia Salts got a divorce in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. So it is very possible that Alice migrated out with her sister’s family and later married George W. Shields.

1880 - 1882, the family migrates to Missouri - Going by the birth locations for the last two children on the 1880 census, it looks like they migrated to Missouri sometime between 1880 and 1882. William, who was 8 in the 1880 census, was born in Missouri in 1882.

The story of Hannah’s death - Family story is, they were clearing land and burning brush in preparation for spring planting, when one or two young children "caught fire" and either burned to death or died soon afterwards due to burns. Hannah is said to have "lost her mind" and died shortly thereafter.

1887 - around or before - Hannah Elizabeth Salts Shields is buried along with three of their children - Martha, Mary [who are twins] and an infant. They share the same stone in the Squibb Cemetery, Greene County, Missouri.

1887, July 3rd - George married Alice Pendergrass.
