1900, April 6 - William applied for a Confederate soldier’s pension on the 6th of April in 1900. On the application he stated that he was with the Confederate side nearly four years, in Company A. 16th Georgia Calvary. And that he was a blacksmith, had made guns and had been a nailcutter.

In identifying his family and distant relatives, William stated that his grandfather Salts was a descendent of John Sevier, the Govenor of Tennessee. He also said that his gr grandfathers Rogers and Sevier, along with his grandfather Salts, had all fought in the War of 1812.189

William must have moved to Ashe County, North Carolina, because in he is listed in the 1880 Federal Census there, house 96, family 106, Laurel Township: William age 33, a farmer, born in Tennessee, wife Nancy A. age 28 born in Virginia, daughter Viora age 8 born in Virginia, daughter Cordelia age 7 born in Virginia, son Samuel age 4 born in Tennessee, and daughter Kate age seven months born in Tennessee. The move to North Carolina would have to have occurred after December 1879 (birth of Kate) and before June 1880 when the Federal Census was taken. William stated that his parents were born in Tennessee and his wife's parents were born in Virginia.

Death, about 1922 - Notes from Kevin Salts via Connie Gray regarding William B. Salts - “My great Aunt Ola (Salts) Neal told me that William was buried in his Confederate Uniform." [added 1 May 2011]

[From Connie - Ola was the daughter of Samuel Salts (William B.'s son. Kevin said he visited with her when he was about 12 and got a copy of the family picture then. Ola was born in 1909. I think William B. died about 1922 - so Ola would have been about 13 at her grandfather's funeral. - Connie
