2011, February 11 - Obituary - Plato E. Saltz, 96, of Hayesville died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at his residence. Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, with the Revs. Chester Jones and Johnny Foster officiating. Burial was in Rogers Family Cemetery. A native of Madison County, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Elminor Briggs Saltz. He had lived in Clay County since 1922 and worked as a welder and iron worker, including projects in the Northwest such as Grand Coulee Dam. He enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing in Alaska. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Willa Mae Mease Saltz, who died in 1985; one son, Randall Lee Saltz; one daughter, Henrietta Anderson; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are his wife, Muriel Taylor Saltz; one daughter, Mary Zell Saltz Manro of Mercer Island, Wash.; one son, James Russell Saltz Sr. of Hayesville; four grandchildren, including Cindi Saltz Simmons of Sylva; five great-grandchildren; and four step-children. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

2011, February 11 - Obituray - from the Ivie Funeral Home webpage - Plato E. Saltz, 96, of Hayesville died Friday, February 11, 2011 at his residence. He was a native of Madison County, NC, but had lived in Clay County since 1922. Plato was a welder and iron worker, having worked on many projects and dams in the Northwest. Among these was the Grand Coulee Dam. In his later years, he enjoyed his farm, family, and traveling to Alaska, where he hunted and fished. He was of the Baptist faith. He was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Elminor Briggs Saltz and the husband of the late Willa Mae Mease Saltz, who died August 5, 1985. He was also preceded in death by a son, Randall Lee Saltz, who died September 6, 1994; a daughter, Henrietta Anderson, who died March 11, 1995; a granddaughter, Terri Saltz, who died November 13, 1983; and a son-in-law, Jim Manro, who died November 23, 2010.

Surviving are his wife, Muriel Taylor Saltz; a daughter, Mary Zell Saltz Manro of Mercer Island, WA; a son, James Russell Saltz, Sr. and wife, Scottie of Hayesville; a son-in-law, Harold Anderson of Quincy, WA; four grandchildren, Melissa Saltz Cheek of Raleigh, Cindi Saltz Simmons and husband, Si of Sylva, Jim Saltz of Murphy, and Amy Saltz Brodhage and husband, Mark of Huntsville, AL; five great grandchildren; and four step-children also survive. A memorial service was held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 19, 2011 in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with Dr. Chester Jones and Pastor Johnny Foster officiating. Inurnment was in the Rogers Family Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends was from 1:00-1:50 Saturday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville prior to the services.
