Civil War Notes - from Dixie, 12 November 2008
William Starnes, son of Elizabeth Salts and Frederick Starnes, was born sometime after 1820. He was married first to an unknown spouse who apparently died before 1850. His spouse does not appear on the 1850 census and he is living with his parents, younger brother Henry and three children. William Starnes married Elizabeth Luttral 9 Jan 1851 in Washington County TN.
In the Civil War, William Starnes enlisted as a private in Co. F, 60th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, also known as Crawford's 79th, at Jonesboro, TN on 27 Sept. 1862. He was listed as 38 years old, b. 1824, which agrees with his age on the 1850 and 1880 censuses. He was mustered in 7 Nov. 1862 at Haynesville and was recorded present in Jan, Feb, Mar, and April, 1863. He was captured on May 17, 1863 at the battle at Big Black Bridge in Mississippi, part of the battle at Vicksburg, along with 1800 other men, among them his cousins John and Nicholas Salts and Harrison Mitchell all of whom subsequently died in captivity.
As captive, Willam Starnes was sent to Memphis on May 25, 1863. From there he was sent to Ft. Delaware, Del on June 15 and transferred by way of Ft. Columbus, NY to the prison at Point Lookout, Md on Sept. 26, 1863. In January, 1864, he swore allegiance to the U.S., changed sides, and was released 25 Jan 1864 at Point Lookout.
