Notes for John MITCHELL Jr.
From: Dixie Dellinger, Subject: Mitchell sons in the civil War..., date 2 Nov 2008
John, Jr. b. 1838 --- nothing. There are 29 John Mitchells from Tennessee in the Confederate forces alone in the Civil War, and no way to know one from the other. I've looked at, just as a "hunch," one who was in the same regiment as Jesse Salts's son John who died at Corinth. 100 young Wa Co men were in the same company in that regiment, organized at the same time, but then look at all the other regiments he could have been in! A John Mitchell's pension was applied for by his mother Sarah, which really does point his way, but that record, too, I can't find again. I know I found it once through Ancestry, but it eludes me now.
Civil War Notes - 12 November 2008 - It all checks out, enlisted at Knoxville, mustered in at Cumberland Gap. He was listed as 25 in 1862, which is close but not exact as far as the census goes. He is in a different company (D) from John Salts (B) and so didn't go in exactly the same pathway. John H. Mitchell was captured at Chickamauga, after John Salts had died, and was sent to Louisville for exchange and then to Camp Douglas, IL where he almost finished out the war before being sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was released there in June 1865, after the war was over.
