1816 - On May 29, 1816 James Matthews bought 50 acres in Caney Valley, Hawkins County, Tennessee for $100.613

1817 - On February 20, 1817 James sold the 50 acres—including the place where he currently lived—in Caney Valley for $600.614

1820 - They traveled via flatboat from Hawkins County around 1820 and settled in the Little Coon area of Jackson Co., AL.595

1822 - On December 14, 1822 James Matthews of Jackson County, Alabama sold 60 acres in Hawkins County on the north side of the Holston River in Caney Valley.615

1830 - In 1830 James owned six slaves. James and Elizabeth are both buried in the Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery on Little Crow Creek -- three limestone boxed graves in a row.611

1850 - James is not listed on the 1850 Jackson County, Alabama census.595
