Drury and Mary moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee in about 1820 and he died there in 1847. Drury’s will directed that his estate be divided equally amongst his nine children except that the executor was to pay his “son James Matthews thirty dollars to make him equal with the other children before a division -- he never having received a bed nor a cow and calf from me.”

I, Drury Matthews do make and publish this as my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at any time made.
First, I direct that my funeral expenses and all my debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of any moneys I may be possessed of or may first come into the hands of my executors.
Secondly, I have now lived to see nine of my children grown and raised to acknowledge so many heirs (to wit).
Thomas Matthews, William Matthews, Cinthia Morris, Eliza jones, Buckner Matthews, James Matthews, Drury Matthews, Mary Barnes, and Betsy Matthews all of whom is near and dear to me alike and what I have gained in property both real and personal I wish them to share equal in -- Thomas Matthews departed this life some time in April last and his heirs will be entitled to his portion, with the exceptoin of fourteen dollars and twenty five cents which I advanced to him a short time previous to his death. Eliza Jones is also dead leaving only one heir David Jones, a grandchild of mine, and should he die without having any child or children, my will is that the portion he receives shall revert back to my other heirs and be equally divided amongst them as aforesaid. My will and desire is that my executors pay to my son James Matthews thirty dollars to make him equal with the other children before a division, he never having received a bed nor cow and calf from me.
Lastly, I do hereby nominate and appoint William C. Batson, William Matthews and Drury Matthews as my executors.
In witness whereof I do to this my will set my hand and seal this 6th day of October 1847.
