She is listed on the 1864 Roll of Indigent Persons in Parker County, Texas with 5 dependents. She obtained 1280 acres of land in Webb County588, Texas in 1881 for James C’s Confederate service.589 590 However, wisely, she sold the land591 and lived in the Parker/Tarrant County area of Texas592.

James has been found as James M. Matthews in some sources. But most of the time he has been found as James C. Matthews.583

1860 - I can not find them on the census -- 1 May 2007

1860-1862 - James has been found on the “Jury Scrip paid list from 1860 - 1862 for Parker County Texas.584

1862, July 20th - We are not certain when he moved to Texas. He was a Confederate with Co. C. Griffing’s Battalion Texas Infantry. His service started in July 20 1862 and he enlisted in Tarrant Co. (Fort Worth), Texas.585

On another document regarding James’ Civil War duties, it says that he was a Private with Co. A, 21st Reg. TVI, Col. W.H. Griffin, cmdg. CSA. He enlisted Au. 22-62 in Tarrant Cty. for 3 years. His service: 2 mos. at $11; total $22. The Remarks: R&E; Enr. off. l ieut. Carson; Mus. off. Capt. Samuel Emory; Co. std. at Sabine Pass Au. 31-63; Last pd. Je. 30- 63; 1 MR dtd. Je. 30-Aug. 31-63; MR shows present.586

1862, August 22nd - [Translation for the above paragraph] He enlisted on August 22, 1862 at Tarrant City, Fort Worth , Texas for three years. He was given two months pay [in advance?] which totaled $22.00. On August 31st in 1963 his company was stationed at Sabine Pass, Texas.

1863-1865 - James is listed on the Confederate Indigent Families List of Texas, 1863-1865. He has six dependents.587

1864, January - Jame’s death can be found in his Civil War papers. However, it does not give the day.

1928 - His daughter, Amanda applied for the United Daughters of the Confederacy in June 1928. On her application form she notes that her father was killed at Sabine Pass, Texas. And, that her mother, Rose, was granted a military pension at Forth Worth, Texas. It also states that James went out as calvary, but the horse and saddle were sent back in two or three months. Amanda’s brothers, A.R. and J.W. signed the recommendation form.585
