All that is known about Peter and his father, Richard, has been taken from various county records. So much of their private lives are now obscure. Events can only be inferred through historical reference.. the fact that Peter and his second wife were born somewhere in Virginia is known because of Federal Census records, and a marriage record of his son. Peter was bound out in March 1802 in Pittsylvania County, VA to a Thomas Tiffin. This arrangement did not last long, because, withing just a year or so, Peter migrated with his father and brothers across the Alleghany Mountains to the central part of Kentucky. It was a time in our history when many were moving from one place of residence to another, settling new and virgin lands. Therefore, records are few.
Peter and Richard are found next in Casey County, Kentucky, where they paid a poll tax in 1809. However, Peter was in Jessamine County, KY when the Federal Census was taken in 1810. Peter owned land on Hickman Creek, according to tax records.. The following information taken from a history of Jessamine County describes the Hickman Creek area of the county:
