This is saying (from information given to the census taker by the head of household) that Robert M. Salts's father (supposed to be the elusive John Salts we have been seeking) WAS born in Germany. This is the first concrete evidence that his father was actually born in Germany, which has been told in the family.
If the other information that Julie gleaned from the TN census of 1840, showing John, Rachel, and the two boys, in which John is listed as 60-70 years old, is this father of R. M. Salts, then he would have been born in Germany between 1760 and 1770.
