On the 1850 census for Washington County, Tenn., there is a child listed named Susan Patterson. From this finding it has been determined that Sarah was probably married before and was a widow with one child when she married Thomas G. Brown in 1840. At that time, Susan would have been three. It is thought that Sarah's husband named Patterson must have died sometime before 1840.
