Notes for Harry Clive CAMPBELL
Henry "Clive" Campbell was born on January 6, 1907 at the "Brick House" on the Roberts Farm in Johnson County, Iowa near Sharon, IA and s.w. of Iowa City.
When very young Clive moved with his family (he had three older sisters, and later on had one younger sister and four younger brothers) to another acreage where his father farmed for a year or so, then finally to the "Hughes Farm" which was known as the family home. Clive attended Willow Grove Grade School. He attended Sharon High school, and City High School and graduated after one year at University High School. He liked the arts and shop class and he enjoyed singing and performing in musical events. He also loved to joke and tell stories...which we all remember so fondly.
He grew up on the farm, helping with work there. In later years he helped father Edgar and brother Carl in the operation of the Sharon General Store for about 4 years, after they moved away from the farm.
Clive was a member of O.E.S. at Sharon for several years along with his mother, & some of his sisters and brothers. He also joined the Welsh Congregational Church in 1923.
He worked for several years at the Turkey Processing Plant in Kalona, Iowa and then for a number of years as a 'cow tester' in Johnson and Washington Counties. [This job required him to go to a residence & test milk samples from each cow in the milking herd both in the evening and in the morning. Thus he stayed overnight at the homes of the families he was 'testing' and experienced their way of life; this included many Amish & Mennonite families which he revisited once a month]. When not 'testing', or on his days off each month, he would often visit his sisters, Maude Wood (near Tiffin, IA), Muriel Darnell (in Wellman, lA) and Melva Thomas near Sharon,IA & other family and friends. At the Thomas's he had his own room in the back of the 'wash house' to retreat to.
Clive liked to travel and took several vacations by bus. He especially enjoyed going to east Tennessee to visit relatives & always came home with pictures & many stories if his travels.
In about 1949 Clive had tuberculosis and spent a couple years in Oakdale T.B. Sanitorium recouperating. Peggy recalls accompanying her parents on Sunday visits with him on the big 'sun porches' there. He later moved back to Kalona , lived at the 'hotel' and did odd jobs. He also lived off and on with sister Melva.
He also developed diabetes for which he gave himself daily injections for many years. As his health declined he lived for a while in a hotel in Kalona,IA and then at the Schrock Nursing Home in Wellman, IA near his sister Muriel. It was here he died in 1973.
Clive is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in east Iowa City, IA, Johnson County, in the Campbell family lots.
