Notes for Mary Martha CAMPBELL
Mary M. Campbell was the 6th child born to Edgar and Ora Florence Campbell. She was born March 3, 1913 on the 'Hughes Farm' in rural Sharon Twsp. Johnson Co. Iowa. She had 3 older sisters and 3 older brothers and later 2 younger brothers. She grew up on the farm and attended Willow Grove Grade School. She went to Sharon High School for 3 years and graduated from University High School after one year there, on May 31, 1929. She was a member of the Welsh Congregational Church in her youth, joining at age ten in 1923, along with her brother Carl. She worked part time at Yetters Dept Store in Iowa City during high school (Saturdays and summers) & through the years going to the University. [Her cousins Lela and Edna Campbell helped her find these jobs.]

From 1930-1940 Mary taught in several Johnson County rural schools including the Will Snider School and a school N.W. of Wellman. On November 2, 1936 Mary received a First Grade Teacher's Certificate for Johnson County. This allowed her to teach in Johnson County Iowa.

She attended the University of Iowa at various intervals. She graduated from SUI in education on June 3, 1940. She signed a teacher's contract for 10 months for $900/ school year for 36 weeks on Aug. 20, 1940. From Sept 3, 1940 to June of 1945 she taught in Jackson County at the Bellevue Iowa Elementary School. On August 24, 1945 she was granted an Iowa Standard Secondary Teachers Certificate. The certificate indicated she was a graduate of the State University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts with a General Science major.

In the '40's she went to Chicago to work. She lived with sister-in-Iaw (brother Bob's wife) Dorris Feldman Campbell & a roommate. She & Dorris both worked for Montgomery Ward Company . Mary also later worked for a scientific supply house for school. [Peggy has a small box of classified 'rocksamples' which Mary prepared while at this job.].

In 1945 Mary moved to Santa Rosa, California, to teach in the elementary schools in the area including the Santa Rosa and Sebastapol, CA schools. On March 4, 1954 Mary was granted a life diploma by the California State Board of Education which authorized her to teach in any Calif. Public Elementary School.

She had taught in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District for 10 years when she was named Teacher of the Year at Flowery School at Fetters Springs, CA. on February 10, 1970. [See the picture of her presentation of this award.] She was recognized for her vigorous effort in behalf of the evaluation of the social studies textbooks.

Mary loved to travel. She had a small trailer which she pulled behind her car and it would be her home for many weeks. Her travels took her around the United States, Canada, and Mexico as well as back to Iowa, her 'home'. The summer of 1953 her niece, Peggy Thomas, accompanied her on a 3-4 week trip thru the south east, east, into Canada and back to Iowa (visiting her brother, Bob Campbell & wife Dorris, at his summer work at Towering Pines Boys Camp near Eagle River, WI. enroute back).

One year in the 1970's she was an exchange teacher to Scotland, the land of her ancestors. She enjoyed this year very much excepting for the harsh climate. During this year she also got to the European continent to do some traveling.

One of Mary's hobbies was photograpy. She took many photos and slides which her family, friends & students enjoyed. [Peggy has a scrapbook which Mary made for her of their trip]. Mary took pictures of historical sights & places as well as plants, animals, etc. to use in her science & other classes. She also belonged to a 'Camera Club' for several years.

Mary had a special interest in geology. She was an inveterate rock collector. Most of her travels took her (eventually) to fossil sites or good rock hunting areas, especially in the west, etc. She would always hunt for geodes along the Mississippi River when in the midwest. She enjoyed lapidary work and used her stones and rocks in making pieces of the jewelry including bolo ties, bracelets, rings, pendants, etc. She also attended many craft fairs where she sold her hand made rock jewelry. [Peggy & Don have several of her jewelry pieces which she gave them as gifts. They also have many rocks which Mary found & collected in their 'back yard garden'. Mary belonged to a' Rock Club' where she sold and exchanged her 'treasures'.

Mary retired in California in a Santa Rosa & she lived in a trailer park there until March of 1990.

She then returned to the Iowa City, IA area to be near family, as her health was failing. She lived in two Iowa City nursing homes, the latter being Greenwood Manor. She did not easily recognize her family after about 1994 as she sufferd from Alzheimer's disease. She passed away on October 27, 1997 at the age of 84. Mary is buried in the Campbell lots at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, IA, in Johnson County.
