Allen Salts was a resident of the Bowmantown area of Washington County between 1835 and 1844. He is listed among the early residents in a day (account) book of Bowman's Mill. The Bowmantown community, located about five miles west of Jonesboro, had its beginning with a North Carolina land grant, dated in 1778, and issued to John Trotter. It was later purchased by John Carmichael and then sold to John Bowman in 1833. Daniel Bowman built a grist mill near where Blackley Creek empties into Big Limestone Creek. The mill was operated by four generations of Bowmans until about 1930 (Ref: p.163, History of Washington County, Tennessee, compiled by the Watauga Association of Genealogists, 1988).

Please Note - There is a confusing birth location for his mother on the 1880 census. The Salts research group noted that the only other person who was born in Maryland was Rebecca Ball Salts, wife of Daniel Salts. So if that's the case, then Allen isn't the son of Henry, but the grandson of Henry. Maybe one day the answer will be found. Until then, I will keep Allen here as a son of Henry's.
1897 - An inventory of Allen's estate was taken in December 1897 "Washington County Inventory Book 5A," page 262.
OTHER FACTS -2 February 2008 - From Layton Stout, who descends from Allen Salts’ line - Allen Salts had two other children that you did not know about with Sarah Erwin. They are: George W. Salts born April 13,1868 died March 3,1950 and Julia Alexendra Salts born 1870 died July 12 1903. These two children were raised by the neighbors of Allen and Sarah Salts they were James (Jim) and Rebecca Tesnear. The Washington and Greene County line went right thru the two neighbors land, this is probably why you did not find out this information. Thats why the two children did not show up on the Washington County Census because they were in Greene County. George and Julia ended up adding the Tesnear name to theirs. George W. Salts Tesnear married Mary Ethel Whitaker. Their daughter was Fannie Louise Tesnear who had a daughter named Wanda Faye Tesnear who is my mother.
