Notes for George Henry JORGENSEN
The world has lost a piece of history and a part of Idaho. On December 23, 2010, George Jorgensen passed away. He leaves behind a legacy of a long and successful life.

He was born on a ranch two miles south of Soda Springs on September 12, 1920. He was the first of five sons born to Nels H. and Bessie Saulls Jorgensen. Growing up on the ranch, he learned the value of hard work. As a young man, he worked on ranches and broke a lot of horses. He later worked construction and was a catskinner.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the European Theatre from D-Day until 1945. He then returned to Soda Springs and worked in the timber. Soon after, he moved to Pocatello for a short time and used the GI Bill to attend Idaho State College.

He met Donna Jeppesen at an outdoor dance in Grace. They were married on July 3, 1948. He was recalled to the Army during the Korean War. He served with the 89th Engineers in France. After his discharge, he returned to Soda Springs and went to work for Tipton Motors as the first body and fender man in Soda Springs. It was during this time that their son, Val, was born. Their first daughter, Wendy, was born a year later. Friendships forged during this time were lifelong and close.

In 1958, he moved his family to a new house in Blackfoot and went to work at the AEC Site. Soon after, their youngest daughter, Julie, was born. He worked as a Millwright until 1976, when he went into supervision at TAN. He retired from the site on February 1, 1985.

There was not a stream in Idaho he didn't want to fish or a mountain he didn't want to hunt. He loved camping and fly fishing on the Blackfoot River Narrows. He also was great at fixing things. His children often said that Dad could fix anything that was broken.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Vern, John, Dave and Frank; and his wife of 51 years, Donna.

He is survived by his son, Val (Beverly) Jorgensen, of Shelley; his daughters; Wendy (Terry) Scott, of Blackfoot and Julie (Rob) Griffin, of Pocatello. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Kandice (Karl Woodward) Jorgensen, Melody (Pete) Budahl and Toni (Brian) Coulson, all of Idaho Falls; grandson, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Jake (Yvonne) Scott, of Sahuarita, Ariz.; stepgrandson, Brian (Chandra) Griffin, of Fort Hall; and great-grandchildren, Dracon Coulson, Ethan and Jordan Scott and Jadon Griffin.

There will be a visitation for family and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, January 3, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. in Blackfoot, Idaho. A graveside service with military rites will be in Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs on Tuesday, January 4, at 11 a.m.

Condolences may be sent to the family at condolences@hawkerfuneralhome.com.
