General Notes from Greg Matthews
617: Matthew has proven to be a very enigmatic figure. His name does not appear often in the records. He is quite possibly the Matthew Mathis who died intestate in Lunenburg County, VA in 1784. It is also possible that he was the sworn chain carrier for Francis Mabry for a Granville Grant that Mabry received in Granville County, NC on 27 Apr 1753. This Francis Mabry is known to be the son of Francis Mabry/Maybury/Maberry who lived beside James Mathews Sr. in Surry County, VA in the early 1700s.

The names of Matthew's children are unknown, but it is nearly certain that he had some as there are too many Matthews' in Lunenburg County, VA, Halifax County, NC and Edgefield County, SC who are almost certainly descendants of either James Mathews Sr. or his brother Thomas, Charles Mathews, but who as of yet have proven elusive in connecting them to the family at-large.

Noted events in his life were:
• Matthew's name first appears in the records on a deed of gift where James Mathews Sr. gives him 200 acres of land in Brunswick County and explicitly names Matthew as his son. Matthew married Judith {M5S}.

Noted events in her life were:
• Deed: First record, 5 Oct 1748, Brunswick County, VA.42 Judith's name first appears on a deed where she and husband Matthew sold 200 acres of land (possibly the 200 acres that Matthew's father had given him) to hugh Farnham of Richmond, VA.

The child from this marriage was:
i. Matthew Mathews.

Matthew next married Martha Russell {M5S/2}, daughter of Philemon Russell and Elizabeth.
The child from this marriage was:
i. Philemon Mathews.
