Notes for RITTER [RETTER]
Taken from Genforum - regarding Ritter’s from around Shelby Co., KY

The 1850 Census for Shelby Co., Ky shows Michael Ritter as being of age 75 and born in Ky. Coonrad Ritter is shown as being 66 and having been born in Md. It is hard to picture the older brother being born in Ky. and the younger in Md.

Linda (message 1242) informs us that John Ritter, of Frederick County, Md. had a son Conrad, but that John died in 1771, so this cannot be the father of our Coonrad Ritter of Shelby Co.

The 1820 Census for Jessamine Co., Ky. and the 1830 Census for Shelby Co. Ky. show only two males, but looking at the estate of Coonrad Ritter and his wife (H)anna Ritter, the heir is James (T.) Ritter. Michael Ritter's household includes up to six males, so he might be your best bet for your ancestor.

Now Coonrad Ritter, Michael Ritter, and John Ritter do seem to be linked. There is a John Ritter in Bourbon County in the 1810 Census. Coonrad has property dealings with deeds registered in Bourbon County, Ky. in 1807 and 1809, and marries Hanna Bailey of Fayette Co., Ky. -- the county between Bourbon and Jessamine counties in 1812. Then Coonrad shows up on page 090 of the 1830 Census for Jessamine Co., Ky. Michael and John are listed in the same book on pages 089 and 086, respectively. Finally, Coonrad and Michel dispose of their Jessamine Co., Ky holdings and arrive in Shelby Co. in time for the 1830 Census. Oh, yes, Michael Ritter is a witness to the marriage between John Ritter and Esther Zike.

Now John Alexander Ritter was born in 1819 in Jessamine Co. Ky, the son of John (A?) Ritter and Agnes Butler Ritter. That father is described as being a native of Ky. That leaves the senior John and Michael Ritter as being born in Ky. in a very early period.

There were Ritters in Mason Co., Ky. at an early period. Mason Co. land and tax records show a John Ritter starting in 1793 and ending with the 1800 Census of Mason Co. I do not find record of him in Mason Co. after that, but find that a John Ritter dealing with certificates for land in Bourbon Co. in 1809, 1811 and 1812 and I do find a John Ritter in Bourbon Co. in the 1810 Census with seven males, including two in the 26 to 45 age range. (Enough to include a patriarch John; a senior John; the father of John Alexander; Michael; and Coonrad).

I have yet to find a connection between the Ritters of Jessamine/Shelby counties and those from Woodford/Barren/Christian counties. Have you? On the other hand, I see a possible link with the early folks in Mason Co., through central Kentucky; then, on to Indiana, Missouri, and points west. All of this I find very plausable, but insufficient to actually prove any connection. Do you have any data that might help through light on these families?
