Samuel Salts’ Mother
Samuel Salts’ Mother has not been documented. A marriage between a Salts and a Sevier has not been found. Two descendants of Samuel Salts have taken the Family Tree Family Finder test. This test looks for matching segments of autosomal DNA between two individuals. Both descendants of Samuel Salts had a match to an individual who descended from Jacob Brown the Wagon Maker and Elizabeth Goettgen.
Mary Brown, married to Henry Salts, was the daughter of Jacob Brown the Wagon Maker and Elizabeth Goettgen. This family Finder match shows that Samuel Salts’ mother was a daughter of Henry Salts and Mary Brown. None of the female Salts listed below have been documented as daughters of Henry Salts and Mary Brown. Some of the women may be daughters of John A. Salts and Elizabeth Unknown or possibly other Salts families who have not been identified.

Elizabeth Salts (b. ~1793) was married to Fredrick Starnes in 1810. Elizabeth may be the oldest child of Henry and Mary Salts. Elizabeth and Fredrick Starnes lived in Embreeville, TN and do have a female 20-30 and an unidentified male under 5 living with them in the 1830 census. Elizabeth would have been named after Mary’s mother, Elizabeth Goettgen.
Hester Salts (b. ~1795) was married to Sample Orr in 1816.
Sarah “Sally” Salts (b.~1800) was married to John Mitchell in 1819.
Nancy Salts was married to Moses Delashmet in 1823.
The following Salts women have been excluded as Samuel’s Mother because they were too young.
Rosannah Salts (b.~1815) married to Elkanah McBroom. She has been placed as Andrew Salts’ daughter.
Alice “Allie” Salts (b.~1818) married to James Vaughn Johnson. Alice fits as a daughter of Henry in the 1830 census.
Ellenner/Ellender Salts, birth date unknown, married Nathan Shepard 5 Sep 1833. If she was 18 when married, she fits in Henry’s household in the 1830 census. She was probably too young to be Samuel’s mother.
One of the following Salts women could be the mother of Samuel Salts.
Tempie Salts (b. ~1807) married Jeremiah Million on 24 Jun 1827. Tempie was listed in the 1830 census with Jeremiah. Therefore, she would not be the female 20-30 in Elizabeth Salts Starnes household.
Leanora Salts (b. ~1812) married Thomas G. Brown on 9 Mar 1831. She fits in the 1830 census in Henry’s household. She would have been 14 when Samuel was born.
Polly Salts, listed as 15 to 20, in the 1830 census with Andrew McCoy. They married 5 May 1830. She would have been 15/16 when Samuel was born and not the 20-30 female in Elizabeth Starnes household in 1830.
Sarah Elizabeth Salts (b.~1807), married Enoch Presnell/Prestley 26 Feb 1832 in Wilkes County, NC. She would have been 19 when Samuel was born. She could have been the 20-30 female in Elizabeth Starnes household in 1830. However, since we think Elizabeth Salts Starnes was Henry Salts and Mary Brown’s first child, it is unlikely they would have two daughters named Elizabeth. It is unlikely Sarah Elizabeth is a daughter of Henry Salts and Mary Brown.
Unidentified Salts – It is possible Samuel’s mother died early and was never listed by name in a census or a marriage record.
