Knowledge of Daniel's birth year - In the old Salts letter, Daniel's birth year is given as 1781 twice, which can not be true for the following two reasons. Firstly, his parents never married until 1792. Secondly, it is more or less common knowledge around the Washington County, Tennessee area that Daniel married Rebecca Ball McCardle when he was 18. Rebecca was 22 years old at the time of their marriage and a widow with a small child. Due to the social implications of the time, their marriage was bordering on the risqué.

Henry, Daniel, John Leland (notes on lineage from author)

• A letter from Daniel’s great granddaughter Glenn Triplett Newman to her cousin Fay Saults Ford identifies Daniel as the father of John Leland Arthur Salts.

• The unpublished research of Dan Saults conducted in the early 1960’s also identified the lineage as Henry, Daniel, John Leland, Daniel Napoleon, etc. His research was based on letters, memories, family notes and census reports.

• In a letter written by Harlow Arthur Salts (son of D.N., son of Leland, son of Daniel), he says, “dad’s grandfather was a law officer.” This clue matches up with Daniel’s occupation given on the 1850 census where he is listed as a Collecting Officer. There are many stories that have been told by all branches of Leland’s three families in Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee. All identified Daniel as the father of John Leland Arthur Salts of Washington County, Tennessee and Rebecca Ball McCardle as his mother.
