1862, September 27 to September 27, 1863 - Civil War notes on John Salts - from Dixie: 11 November 2008
John Salts, son of Andrew Salts and Rosannah Boyd, was born 27 December, 1832 [family Bible] and married Mary Ann Wattenberger 3 Sep 1857 in Washington Co. TN. They had two girls: Martha Ellen born 22 Mar, 1860 in Knoxville TN, and Susan Alice born 2 Oct. 1861 in Washington Co.

John Salts enlisted at Jonesborough, TN as Corporal in the 60th TN Mounted Infantry, Crawford's 79th Regiment, Co. F on 27 Sept 1862, age 29. He was mustered in on Nov. 7, 1862 at Haynesville, TN. He was present in Jan & Feb. and Mar & Apr. 1863. He and 1800 other Confederates were captured on 17 May, 1863 at Big Black Bridge in Mississippi, one of the battles fought around Vicksburg, and sent to Memphis TN May 25, 1863. On June 15, he was received at Fort Delaware, DE. In July he was sent from Fort Delaware to City Point, VA for exchange. Apparently he was not exchanged, for he appears on a Roll of Prisoners sent from Ft. Delaware to Point Lookout MD on Sept 20, 1863 with the notation "Left in hospital at Ft. Delaware." He died there of scurvy on 27 Sept. 1863, one year to the day after his enlistment. [www.footnote.com]

In the family Bible was only a notation: "Died in Civil War, 1864," so it is likely that his family did not know when he actually died. Cpl. John Salts Co F 60th TN Mtd. Infantry is listed on a monument erected at Fort Delaware, DE to the Confederates who died there, which monument is now just across the river at Finn's Point National Cemetery, Salem, NJ.
