Fannie spent a number of years living with and taking care of her great uncle and aunt, David and Amanda M. Thompson. Amanda died last and left her farm to her niece, Ella Saltz Triplett, Fannie's mother. However, it was said that Amanda wanted to change her will and leave Fannie enough for her education. This was confirmed by Amanda's executor of her will, Thomas L. Cate and various other people who testified in Fannie's behalf.

Amanda's doctor also testified on Fannie's behalf. In his statement he said that Amanda needed Fannie's help, but was sorry that she had to miss school. Amanda wanted to repay Fannie by giving her a legacy to cover any educational costs she might need.
