1930 - Jim can be found on the 1930 census in Chicago, Centra Hotel on Simmons Street. He is listed as age 70, Divorced, a Laborer at a hotel. He was born in Illinois, father born Tennessee, and his mother born in the United States.
292Information sent from his Illinois cousins said that Jim and Dorsey were divorced while children were young. Jim then moved to Salesburg, IL, then later to Chicago where he lived until his death.
290He lost his mind and died in a mental hospital. He was quite a gambler and won a great deal while he was in the service. He sent it home to his sister, Lillie. When he returned home, he teamed up with a friend and continued gambling.
83 Harlow (his half-brother's son) recalls meeting Jim and his friend in St. Louis, MO. at some point. Harlow passed down the memory of this meeting to his daughter. Something else he remembered James’ fancy pocket knife.

Born in August 1859, in Illinois, he was the son of the late Leland Arthur SALTS formerly of North Henderson, Mercer County, Illinois and the late Eunice (FENTON) formerly of Illinois.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorsey Ella (SMITH) SAULTS, daughter of Killis SMITH and Isabel (ALDRIDGE).
James Henry “Jim” is survived by three children, Nina (SALTS) of Missouri, Harry Harrison of Holden, Johnson County, Missouri, and Harvey Clarence of Knob Noster, Johnson County, Missouri; one sibling, Unknown SALTS; four half siblings, Lillian May (SALTS) McLEAN, Arthur Leland SULTS and his wife Jessie Grace (BOULTON) of North Henderson, Mercer County, Illinois, Jane Lovey “Janie” (SALTS) STEGALL and her husband Delbert STEGALL of North Henderson, Mercer County, Illinois, and Unknown Male SALTS; two grandsons, Harvey Howard of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and Clarence Arthur.
James Henry “Jim” was preceded in death by seven half siblings, Davis B. SALTS of Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana, Mary Frances Anne “Fannie” of Knob Noster, Johnson County, Missouri, Elmira Virginia “Ella” (SALTZ) TRIPLETT of Blackfox, Bradley County, Tennessee, Daniel Napoleon of Knob Noster, Johnson County, Missouri, Margaret (SALTS) of Shanghai City, Warren County, Illinois, William H. “Will” SALTS of Jacksonville State Hospital, Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, and Charles Lavern SALTS of Mercer County, Illinois; two grandparents, Rebecca (BALL) SALTS of Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee, and Daniel SALTS of Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee.
On Carl’s Naturalization Petiton, his step daughter Ida Saults was one of his witnesses. Mary Lowe was the other, but I do not know who she was or if she was connected to the Salts family in any way.
