John Salts, son of Jesse Salts and Sarah Bryan, was born in 1838, according to census records. He married Hannah Mitchell on 2 Jan 1856 in Washington County, TN. No children have been identified.
In the Civil War, John Salts, listed as age 19, joined for duty May 25, 1861 in the 19th Tennessee Infantry, which was just organized in Knoxville. He was in Company B with 100 men from Washington County. He was mustered in at Cumberland Gap, Va side, on 15 Aug. 1861, listed as age 22. His regiment marched from there to Decatur, AL and on to Corinth MS. He died of sickness March 26, 1862 at Decatur, AL just before the battle of Shiloh. [
