Notes for Mary E. DAUGHERTY
Somewhere I got the name Mary Emaline Saults, but on her death certificate it says she was Mary Elizabeth Saults. It does not give her parents’ names or her husband’s name. However, her daughter, Mertie Dove was the informant. When you know that it all falls together.
Mary is on record as the purchaser of a plot in Maple lawn Cemetery in Jonesboro, Tennessee.
The following Salts’ are buried with her:
Charles A. Salts, 8 March 1875 - 29 Jan 1899, died of turberculosis. (Newton's son)
Sara J. Salts, 15 May 1826 - 10 Mar 1910, died of old age. (Newton's mother)
Newton Salts, 13 Aug 1849 - 14 June 1921, died of stomach condition (Mary L.’s husband).
Mary L. Salts, 24 Feb 1853 - 23 Feb 1950. (this is Mary E. Daugherty)

1921, June 14th, Obituary - [a clipping that was found in Newton's family bible] Newton A Salts was born in Jonesboro Tennessee, Aug. 13th 1849 died in the same place Tuesday morning June 14th 1921. Age 71 years, 10 months and one day. Mr Salts and Miss Mary Dougherty were united in marriage Dec. 22, 1870. God gave them five children -a son and daughter are deceased. Some 30 years ago Mr. Salts professed a hope in Christ and joined the Jonesboro Baptist church and was a devoted and faithful member until death. He had been in declining heath for two years or more and has suffered much but at all times he was patient and submissive, and often prayed to depart and be with Jesus which is far better. Like Enoch he walked with God in life and when death came he was unafraid and quietly and peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. Surviving are his widow Mrs Mary Salts and these children, Mrs A. E. Dove Dallas Tex. Thomas Salts of Andover, VA, and George W. Salts of Kansas City, Mo. Two brothers James of Bristol, Tenn. and John of Orlando, Florida.
Another news clipping from Newton's family bible - Newton A Salts. When a prominent man dies his name is published throughout the country, his virtues extolled and made known to all as they should be. But when one dies whose name is not prominently known even in the county and town in which he was born and lived all his life, the town paper gives only a short notice of his demise. Now in memory of one whom the writer has known all his life wishes to say that a more nobler character, unobtrusive in all his ways, manners and habits has never been my fortune to meet. He lived the simple life of a conscious mind whose only desire was to live in peace with all mankind. He never contested a question with you. He spoke his thoughts honestly and truly, often leaving you with the impression that perhaps he was right after all. Despite all his suffering, his whole life seems to have been one continuous flow like the peaceful stream wandering through green meadows and shady dells never murmuring, only waiting for the end that awaits us all, and such to my mind was the life of my friend, Newton Salts. Well can we commend to him the lines of the poet. "Honor and fame from no condition rise, Act well your part, there all the honor lies" - R. S.
