479Cades Cove---The death angel again visited our little cove on Wednesday evening about 5 o‚clock, July 29, 1914, and took from our midst one of our much loved and highly respected citizens, Rev. James M. Saults, M.D.

Dr. Saults was born Aug. 12, 1849 in Sevier County, Tennessee near Meges Mountain. Here he spent his boyhood days among the hills and valleys of dear old East Tennessee. After he grew up to manhood he was united in marriage to Mrs. N.E. Robinson and to this union were born seven children, four boys and three girls, viz: Henry Saults, John Saults, Bob Saults and Willard H. Saults, and Mrs. Hattie McCampbell, Mrs. Lydia Willocks and Mrs. Jeanette Burson all of whom are living except Henry, who died in Wear's Cove several years ago. John and Hattie were the only two of his children who were at his bedside when the end came.

The doctor was subject to spells of colic, and on the afternoon of July 25, he was taken ill with one of these spells. Late in the evening of the next day he was called upon to go to the home of John W. Oliver on a professional call and the doctor feeling a little better decided to answer the call, but on the way he became very sick and on reaching Mr. Oliver's home had to go to bed. He gradually grew worse and on Tuesday Dr. Joe Jenkins of Townsend was called and all the aid that could be given was administered by loving hands, but he grew worse till the end came. Just about two hours before he died a friend asked him about his future in case he should not get well and here are his words: "I have lived a Christian life and I am still trusting in the Grace of the Lord and there is nothing in my way."

Thank God for this dying testimony. This is the loudest preaching I ever heard the doctor do and I've heard him preach many times.

Rev. James M. Saults has been a minister of the Gospel for many years. Some twenty years ago he took charge of the Missionary Baptist Church of this place as their pastor and held same for a number of years and during his time as pastor the church grew and flourished and a church house was built. The Lord has greatly blessed his labors, both as a preacher and a doctor. He was always loving and kind to all people. He never failed to greet us all with a smile. He was strictly honest and upright in all his dealings. He was always afraid to go on debt and often deprived himself of things he needed because he could not pay for them at the time of purchase. Cades Cove has lost their doctor, more to, they have lost a good citizen and a loving friend.

The third Sunday in May was the last time I ever saw the doctor at church, and well do I remember and I shall never forget the scene I witnessed on that day. At the close of services we all sang the "Way Worn Pilgrim" and took the parting hand. Bro. Israel Hatcher, a life long friend, met Bro. Saults in the alter in this handshake and there they embraced each other in their arms and rejoiced and praised God together. Indeed this was the parting hand with Bro. Saults.

Let me say to his sorrowing relatives and friends, weep not for him for he is in the arms of Jesus, but strive to meet him where pain and sickness never come and where partings are known no more.

Like a true soldier, he died on duty and among his best friends." ---Written by a friend.

Dr. James Marian Saults was a man of many professions. Initially, he provided inspiration for the Missionary Baptists, commuting from Tuckaleechee Cove to preach at the Hyatt Hill Church. In the late 19th Century, he set up his son in the mercantile business, buying land from the Cables and building a store building and home near the Cable Mill. He later moved into the Cove, on property acquired from Jules Gregg, where he served as a “pill doctor”. Doctor Saults died in 1914 of a heart attack, suffered while delivering a child of John W.
