Bill was a librarian at the Russell Public Library in Portland, CT. He was a resident of Portland for 43 years.
He attended public schools in Hartford, also Wilbraham Preparatory School, and received a B.S. degree from Bard College in New York state, and a master of science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1936. He later attended Southern Connecticut State College where he received a master's degree in library science with distinction in 1961.
Following graduation from SCST, he served as librarian for the Newington Public Library, before being appointed librarian in Middletown. He was a former president of the Connecticut Library Association and was an executive director of Connecticut Library Week.
For many years he served as president of the Middlesex County Historical Society, and also was a longtime member of the Connecticut and New York Historical Societies. He was formerly chariman of the Portland Conservation Commission, and former treasure of the Middlesex County Chapter of the American Red Cross. For many years he was the Portland correspondent for the Middletown Press.
923In my mother's 1975 Christmas letter, she stated that Bill had suffered a heart attack. He was living in Portland, Middlesex County, Connecticutt at the time.
10Bill never married. He left all of his papers and books to the Portland Town Library. The library has named a reading room after him. It is called the Van Beynum Room.
