Notes for Charles Leon SALTZ I
Confusion over birth and death dates
Birth -
On his WWI Draft Registration card it says he was born on the 25th of February, but on his grave stone it says he was born on the 21st of January. However, on another WWI draft card, it says he was born on 22 February of 1894.
Death - On his grave stone it says he died on the 16th of September 1943, but in the Alabama Death Records it says he died on the 4th of September 1943. I’m so confused.

1899 - 1888-1902, Chittenden’s Meridian City Directory 1899, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, Ancestry.com image #185 [this directory must have been created after the 25th of February 1899. Annie is listed as a widow.]

SALTZ, Charles L, home: Poplar Springs, Meridan, Miss, date of birth: 22 Feb 1894, he was a rubber finisher in a Goodyear Rubber company, he had a wife and child, and he signed the card himself in a very nice handwriting. He was tall and slender, had brown eyes and light brown hair. He was not bald. Dated 29 Mar 1917

SALTZ, Charles L. (Sammie), clk Sou Exp Co h 2718 Valley
SALTZ, Harry clk, b H R Stone

Harry listed above must be Charles’ brother. And it looks like he was working for H R Stone. H R, was Harley R. Stone and the same man who married Charles and Harry’s mother after their father died. So it looks like the two stepsons went to work for their stepfather’s business.

1918 - 1920 - During this time it looks like Charles Leon Saltz separated or divorced from his wife and most probably remarried. However, his first wife claimed that she was a widow on the 1920 census.

It says that she was widowed on the 1920 census, but her husband remarried in Alabama three months after this census was taken. I have looked everywhere for Charles on the 1920 census. His first wife can be found above, and his second wife can be found in Alabama with her parents.

Notes for Owinia Jewell (Spouse 2)
On the 1920 census, Owinia is living in the house hold of her parents. The father is listed as Benton F. Mayton in District 86, sub district 8, Napoleonville, Mobile County, Alabama. the census was taken on the 20th of January 1920. She and Charles married in April, so he should be somewhere around, but I can’t find him.
