There are 12 children listed on the web page and the 1900 census shows Ellen had 9 children, with 8 still alive.
I'm pretty sure that Laura, born December 30, 1892, and Linney are the same person. Linney shows a birth date of Dec 1892 in the 1990 census.
I know there was a Minnie, she is the only one in the Salts family my grandmother liked. I spoke with my Aunt Dorothy (2-24-05), she said she didn't know Minnie's full name but she was the 2nd youngest - so that would make Minnie and Maud M. the same person.
My Aunt Dorothy thought that Malonia and Leona Mae are the same person. Leona Mae and my grandmother Nell had a running feud.
Mr. Chauvin spoke with a Mr. Harold Salts (son of Joseph, grandson of Andrew Jackson) in the late 1980s and he said he was named for one of his father's brothers. Perhaps Shelvin's middle name was Harold - that is the only way we can explain the name Harold since it doesn't show up anywhere in the census.
I think the child shown as not living is probably Shelvin. My Aunt Dorothy said she was told he went to New York and was never heard from again, so the family decided he must have become ill and died or was killed in an accident or something.
So J.V Chauvin and I have decided the nine children are:
1. Jennie
2. Shelvin
3. Joe Welden
4. Sally
5. Thomas Heskell
6. Grover Cleveland
7. Malonia “Leona Mae”
8. Maud M. “Minnie”
9. Laura “Linney” “Polly”
I thought I should go again and send you this information even though I don't have a lot of documentation for it. (End of notes from Connie)
