Notes for Virgil Lafayette SEAY
“In 1913, Virgil Seay, a 21-year-old cowboy, was in charge of driving a heard of cattle from Belcherville to Archer County. The cattle were the foundation heard for the newly purchased 2,000 Seay Ranch, which Jeff Seay of Montague County had bought for his son Virgil to operate. The five day drive from Belcherville required the helop of Virgil’s brother Hardey and cowboys Ike Stout and Perk Gibson with Tom Sanders to drive the chuck wagon. Virgil was to remain a rancher in Archer County until his death in 1963. Maime Matthews, who was to become Virgil’s wife, had been brought to Archer County earlier as an infant in 1896 by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Matthews, from Electra. The doctor, his wife Salvania Victory, and their six children settled in Dundee. After Mrs. Matthews’ death in 1900, the family remeined in dundee until 1905, when they moved to Archer City. It was here that Virgil and Maime were married in 1916.

The Seays made their home on the ranch west of the county seat and became parents of three children, Elaine, born January 12, 1919, now married to Lewis H. Evans and living in California; Evelyn, born November 5, 1921, now deceased; and Jeff, born November 14, 1925. The family moved to Archer City in 1947, but continued to operate the ranch. Jeff served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Both Virgil and Maime were active in civic affairs and in the Methodist Church. She was noted for her interest in history, was a member of the county historical commission and contributed articles to the local newspaper and to agricultural magazines. She was in demand for book reviews to women’s clubs and was an officer in the county council of home demonstration clubs, a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the federated study clubs. Both Seays often helped with the county elections and were staunch Democrats. He was a membor of the masonic Lodge and she of the Eastern Star.
There are seven Seay grandchildren.

Jeff Seay is married to the former Veron Harris and they lived on the ranch. Each has a daughter by a previous marriage and they have three grandchildren.”817

On the information for Virgil’s grave in Loftin’s book, following his entry this can be found “(Jr. & Laura Hardy).” It is not known if there is another Virgil, Jr. and a Laura Hardy Seay burried with her. but this could be the case.563
